Birthday

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004 by mando at 12:26 pm in Family with No Comments

We’ve picked Feb. 12 as the day we’re shooting for the inducement (induction? inducementation?). We’d prefer to let everything run its course as God intends, but little Choo Choo is growing too big too quickly and we’re worried that he’ll end up too big to deliver naturally.

Of course, now that means that he’s really on his way, and here come the butterflies :).

Choo Choo

We’ve been trying to gauge how Aiden’s gonna react to the new baby, and this gave us a nice warm feeling about the whole thing.

I asked Aiden a while back what name he would like for his new baby brother. He thought for a minute, and then, with a huge smile said “Choo Choo!”. Since trains are his absolute favorite thing in the whole world, I think this is a good start.

“Choo Choo” as a name might not stick around too long, but it’ll always hold a special place in our hearts.

WoW public beta

Blizzard announced an open beta application process for World Of Warcraft starting tomorrow.

I’m so excited I can hardly speak.

Kwiki

I’ve been playing with Kwiki at work recently, and it’s pretty darn cool. It makes writing documentation super easy, and that’s always a good thing.

In an unrelated note, I take back every bad thing I ever said about Johnny Cash’s American IV album. I don’t know why it rubbed me the wrong way the first time I heard it. Maybe I wasn’t ready for it. Maybe I wanted the old Johnny back. Who knows?

But man, does this album rock. And rock hard.

R.I.P. Mr. Cash.

Vindication!

Well, not really, but pretty close.

This is the first story that I’ve seen that gets the details of Child’s Play right.

Again, way to go Tycho and Gabe.

Silent Storm

Silent Storm is hard to describe. Here’s what the website says:

Silent Storm is a true 3D tactical turn-based Role-Playing-Game set against the backdrop of WWII.

And that’s what it is: a true 3D, tactical, turn-based RPG set in WWII. But you can’t really get it until you play a bit and see it for yourself.

It’s kinda like the Matrix. No one can tell you what Silent Storm is: You have to experience it for yourself.

But it’s good, like the Matrix. The first and second ones, not the last one.

Somebody Save the Tripas!

Oh. My. God. A Tripas ban? I don’t believe.

If you’ve never had tripas before, it’s hard to relay the impact a ban like this might have. Tripas are, technically, cow intestines. The small intestines, to be more precise. They’re usually deep-fried and served in
small-ish tacos. And they’re delicious.

And now, because of stupid mad cow disease, they’ve been banned in the US. I haven’t been able to find out the reason for the ban, but it’s a bummer nonetheless. No more delicious tiny tacos. No more sitting around outside watching a tripas master cooking up a batch. It’s enough to make a grown Mexican cry.

Child’s Play Redux

Wednesday, January 7th, 2004 by mando at 10:56 am in Games with No Comments

By all accounts, Penny Arcade’s Child’s Play toy drive was a smashing success. Approximately $175,000 worth of toys and $27,000 in cold, hard cash were donated to the children’s hospital. That’s a lot of mojo and Gabe and Tycho deserve some recognition for pulling it off.

So what do they get? Anews story that says that a local catholic school donated $1000 worth of toys. Wow. Not only where they off by like a factor of 100, but how those guys got confused with catholics is beyond me. Maybe some sort of special alien catholics with crazy super powers, but definitely not your run-of-the-mill catholics.

Now, I’m not one to attribute to malice what can be explained by sheer retardation, so I’ll give the media the benefit of the doubt and simply say they’re a bunch of idiots. This is the kind of thing that should have been put on the AP wire, spreading holiday cheer and goodwill throughout the world.

But it didn’t.

So, in my own tiny way, I’ll say thanks to Gabe and Tycho.

Way to go, fellas. You guys are an inspiration to gamers and non-gamers alike. Thanks for pulling something like this together and letting the disenfranchised gaming community contribute. I hope there’s a Child’s Play II, Child’s Play II, and on and on and on until my children’s children are donating Playstation 75’s and copies of Duke Nukem Forever (ZING!).

So….Sleepy…

Monday, January 5th, 2004 by mando at 12:09 pm in General with 1 Comment

I got absolutely no sleep last night. Actually that’s not true. I managed to pass out sometime between the time my wife got into the shower (~ 05:50) and when she left for work (~ 06:30). I had to get up at 07:00, so I don’t think that qualifies as sleep. It’s more like a reaaaaaly long blink.

But, because of this, I’m supa-sleepy. Thankfully, I’ve got some supa-coffee to keep me up. Our friend Shari recently returned from a three-month stint in Florence, Italy and she came back with the coolest present : a
Bialetti Moka
Express
.

It’s a stove top espresso maker, and it makes the most delicious espresso I’ve ever tasted. Of course, the only espresso I’ve ever had has been the Starbucks variety so I’m by no means an expert, but this stuff sure beats the coffee we have at work :).

The Flu and Prince Of Persia

Sunday, January 4th, 2004 by mando at 12:25 pm in Games with No Comments

I’ve been sidelined by the flu since New Year’s Day, so I’ve been able to catch up on my Prince of Persia playing. Last night I finished it off, and here are my observations:

  1. Game roxxored! The game play was awesome, as were the story and presentation.
  2. Some of the puzzles became tedious at times, but never so much that I wantedto stop playing.
  3. 750 animations for the prince?! Great googly-moogly. That explains why everything looked so freakin’ smooth. But here’s a nit that I shall pick: One more weapon-sheathing animation without the dagger motion wouldn’t have killed you guys. I only mention it because when everything is flawless any errors
    stand out.

I think it’s True Crime time now :).

And to Mando @ bananapancake, yes I did steal your name. Sorry about that. You should have gotten a copyright when you had the chance :).
