We’re Hiring!

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005 by mando at 6:44 pm in General with No Comments

We have a programming position open for the right person.

Requirements:

  • Must know Perl and in particular, OO Perl.

You should know how to create a Perl module and use it in a non-sucky way. I don’t mean that you need to be able to map-grep-sort your way through solutions to problems. In fact, gratuitous use of said functions will probably hurt your chances.

  • Must know Unix.

We develop on debian-based distros and deploy on RedHat, so you’ll need to be able to get around and work on Unix.

  • Must know CVS.

You don’t need to be a CVS nerd, but you need to know how to checkout a source tree, modify files, and check them back into the repository.

Nice to haves:

  • HTML::Mason experience would be a plus. A big plus, actually, since all of our frontend stuff is in Mason.
  • CORBA, specifically ORBit, experience would be a plus, but not necessarily a huge one. If you don’t have it, don’t sweat it. Just understand that there is such a thing as CORBA, and that it’s an evil, evil thing :).
  • vi. Actually, that’s neither a plus or minus, but I’ll like you more if you’re a vi-person.

So, if these apply, well, apply :). Just drop me your resume and I’ll make sure it gets in the right persons hands.

BTW, this is in Austin, TX. If you want to move out here for the position that’s fine, but I don’t think there’s any relocation bonus being offered.

Abide

Are you abiding?

I’ve got to admit, I had to hit up dictionary.com for this one :). Abide is one of those words that I can’t really hang a definition on when it’s out of context. So, we’ll take the dictionary’s definitions and see how they apply:

  1. To put up with; tolerate
  2. To wait patiently for
  3. To withstand

Boy, those are some interesting definitions.

  1. I put up with too much: I tolerate things that I shouldn’t. And I’m not talking about the guy at work at ALWAYS takes up 2 parking spaces when he parks. Or my little boy telling me that his Mom said it’s okay if he eats 5 pieces of candy right before bed.

I’m talking about things that are and shouldn’t be and things that shouldn’t be but are. Like the way that the media spreads fear rather than knowledge. Or how someone that claims to follow Christ can have a website called GodHatesFags. Why do I put up with stuff like this?

I imagine that the usual suspects (apathy, laziness) play a role in my inaction, but I fear the underlying reason is more insidious. I fear I do nothing because I doubt my ability to effect change. And I don’t know how to overcome that doubt.

  2. I’m not nearly patient enough. It’s embarrassing and hurtful to talk about all the ways that I haven’t been patient with my wife or boys, so I won’t. I’ll just say that I’m trying as hard as I can.
  3. I’ve learned that I give up much too easily. I don’t know how many times I’ve tried and failed to get in better shape or finish that program or beat that game. And everytime I give up, I believe in myself a little bit less. So tenacity, thine is mine.
